THETAWAVES ARE BACK!

Well, Here I am again after almost two years at Symantec. I thought I was home safe, but here we are in another recession. Oh, yeah, they say it's over, but they said that after the last "jobless recovery" from the dotcom crash of 2001. Remember? Then 9/11 happened, and things got even worse. It took five years for the jobs to come back. So, now as before, I take refuge in my books and paintings, and try to keep up with the latest flavor of javascript. It's jQuery right now, and I am re-building my site for the 8th time in a new script. Don't anybody lecture me on "staying current", because I have been doing quite a bit of that for the past twenty years or more. Anyway, this blog started as a place to post my paintings, but I've decided to also put up some of my digital work. I love Photoshop!

After the dotcom crash of 2001, I began to paint again...
My MA in painting never did come in very handy in Silicon Valley. I had always made a living as a technical artist. But after the dotcom crash, the jobs for technical artists appeared to be gone as well, so why not do what I had always wanted to do? Paint!
I had gone back to school in 1998 to study web design, because that's where all of the graphic design jobs were. By 1999 I was at Oracle doing HTML. But by 2001, the internet game appeared to be over. Every programmer on the planet was working on Y2K (remember?) and everyone else was building web pages. Then, 911 happened, and everything fell off a cliff. Now what? I thought I might as well do some paintings...

After pelicans and egrets, I started to paint other birds. These owl paintings were opportunities to paint beautiful birds in breathtaking landscapes. I can't imagine a more perfect combination of subjects for an artist to paint than birds and landscapes. Everyone should try it! In 2006, I started to paint owls. I painted the Great Snowy White owl first, then the Great Grey. They were my Christmas cards for 2006. (24" x 48")

The eagle, like the wolf, is a favorite subject for artists who love to paint wildlife in the snow. I call this Glacier Eagle. It was my Christmas card for 2005.

The wolf family was painted in 2003. Lots of artists were painting wolves, an endangered species that has been reintroduced to the wild places where they were hunted nearly to extinction. They are to me a symbol of hope and redemption.

Seascapes may not be considered "art" by the powers that be in the art world, but I think it's like playing the classics for a musician - how can you keep a pianist from playing Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata? It may even take a lifetime to get it right, but someone who is obsessed will never give up. The devotion that it takes humbles the spirit and transforms the ego into submission to the beauty of the planet...

My daily painting...
These little landscapes take less than an hour, and reinforce my confidence about color and light. Compositions are minimal, and features of hills and trees are nothing but silhouettes.

My daily paintings...
Daily paintings are intended to be preliminary sketches. I often do three of the same subject at one sitting. When I have the right colors mixed, and extra paint in my brush, there is no sense rinsing it all out. This way I get more practice, more familiarity with the subject. Sometimes I place them side by side, and get a triptych. These are 6" x 6". I call them my "Soggy Fields." (Northern California is so blessed with rain!)

I was raised in Western Pennsylvania, but my family moved to California in 1963. So my sense of landscape crosses the continent. Palm trees against the sunset is a typical California subject. I have done many of these through the years, and never tire of them. From them, I learned much about painting skies. This one is 6" x 8".

explore a variety of subjects and scenes. Hills and mountains, sunsets and beaches, clouds and trees and rocks and more trees... There are so many wonderful subjects, it's hard to choose my favorite.

Landscapes and seascapes are still my favorite, though.
This one is smaller than most of my seascapes - about 8 x 10. It took less than a day to finish. The location is in Carmel - Point Pinos.

Occasionally, I go back to painting people.
This painting of Miles Davis, the jazz great, started as a pen and ink drawing, and then evolved into a complete painting. If I can get enough people interested, I would like to publish giclees (prints on canvas.) That way, I can keep my original, and sell affordable reproductions to other jazz-lovers.

Over the years, my seascapes have developed into backgrounds for birds...
Some of them were finished for a long time before I added birds. Once I did, they came fully to life. I still develop the backgrounds before I paint the birds in the foreground. My little niece, Amber, once remarked that my studio looked like the "Pelican Palace."

I started painting pelicans a couple of summers ago. I have always painted birds, I now have several large finished paintings of pelicans. They seem to have a number of virtues: reserved, comic and graceful, wise and unpretentious. Definitely not taken with fads or trends. Not as nervous, curious, or aggressive as gulls. They mind their own business. These are shown at Natural Bridges State Beach in Santa Cruz.

I paint daily, which should not be unusual for a painter!
Any serious artist should work at their art every day, and a professional should work 8 hours per day. Why? Because that's what other professionals do! The daily painting "phenomenon" is as old as the hills. It used to be referred to as "ala prima" - "all at once", or "in one sitting." What is new is people being able to leave other occupations and do what they have always wanted to do - paint.

When I paint miniatures, I generally don't do only one. I see them as practice sketches or "studies", learning about a specific subject or lighting. Like "daily paintings" they are done quickly and generally, not concentrating upon details, but on the overall impression. These poplar trees grow at the south end of the SF bay, and indeed, all over the bay area. Pick one! (Before more of them are cut down.) These originals are available for $100. I have also done a number of intaglio etchings. This etching of a seahorse was done in the early 1970's at art school. Drawn on a metal plate with a compass needle, it was then put through a press to created a print. (Rembrandt also did etchings, in addition to his marvelous paintings.) I refer to my seahorse drawings and etchings as my "Hippocampus" work; the hippocampus was so-named because it resembled a seahorse to the doctors who first dissected it. A lovely woman neuroscientist bought one of these from me once.

My watercolors and etchings keep combining and recombining. The seashell is an icon for me symbolising my father, who brought this one home from the beach in WWII before I was born. Sorry about the watermarks - I have gotten thousands of clicks over the years. I just wonder where they are all going.

Requiem is the mass for the dead. This piece started as an etching of an American eagle, shot by a patriotic hunter, of course, and evolved into a combination watercolor and pen and ink.

At some point, I started to combine my figurative work with my etchings and watercolors. These became the bulk of my contemporary work. They took on a graphic editorial illustration feel, and even explored historical elements, like the Lincoln face.

In art school, I did a number of drawings for a scientific illustration class. My favorite of these was the iguana. It started as a pointalism project (done only with black dots) and advanced to a pen and ink drawing. I also did an etching of it (drawn on a metal plate with a compass needle.)

I had always been fascinated by jellyfish, but it was a rather unorthodox subject matter, even for wildlife painters... Encouraged by the Visionary painter, Bill Martin, whose work hangs in the SFMOMA, I painted a series of them, starting in 1973.

While I was at Lockheed in the 1980's, I had very little time to paint... I was raising my two children and holding down a fulltime job. But I did manage to paint several large finished wildlife paintings: the Falcons, the Discus, and the Rhinos.

Since my childhood in the Carnegie Museum of Natural History, I have been obsessed with birds. Wildlife in general amazes me, but birds in particular are fascinating. Raptors, the birds of prey, are exciting for their drama and fearlessness. They also made me aware of environmental issues. These beautiful peregrine falcons were so endangered in the 1970's that there were only 120 left in California!

Through college and thirty years of my career, I made a

I started painting as a child in western Pennsylvania. My mother was an accomplished artist, and she sent me to formal art lessons at the Carnegie Museum of Natural History in Pittsburgh. Because I learned to draw in that setting, among dinosaur skeletons, geological specimens, anthropological artifacts and classical Greek architecture, to name only a few, I always saw art and history and science as inseparable. At the "Tam O'Shanters" Carnegie Tech's children's art program, I was required to take notes from a formal lecture on one side of the paper, and do a color crayon drawing based on my notes on the other side. We had to perform well, or we were not invited back. Several times, I was asked to recreate my drawings "at easel" - on stage - as a recognition of my skill. In 1963, my parents moved the family to California, and I was disconnected from those lessons, but I continued to draw and paint. Eventually, I majored in art in college.
